Modals Exercise for Class 9

The modals in English are words that express levels of ability, obligation, permission, and probability. There are many modals, but the most common ones are can, could, may, might, must, should, and would.

What are modals?

Modals are used to express ability, likelihood, certainty, request, advice, and many other things. There are many different modals, and each one has its own unique meaning.

The most common modals in English are can, could, may, might, must, ought, shall, should, and will.

Can

·         The modal can is used to express ability. For example,

·         I can speak Spanish.

Could

·         The modal could is used to express ability in the past. For example,

·         I could speak Spanish when I was in Spain.

May

·         The modal may is used to express possibility. For example,

·         It may snow tonight.

Might

·         The modal might is used to express possibility in the past. For example,

Must

Ought

Shall

·         The modal shall is used to express a future intention. For example,

·         I shall call you later.

Should

·         The modal should is used to express what is advisable. For example,

·         You should wear a seatbelt when you drive.

Will

·         The modal will is used to express future action or events. For example,

·         I will call you later.
